According to data presented by INE and BdP, July was, in terms of the number of guests and overnight stays in Portugal, the best month ever.
Therefore, there was an increase of 85.4% in the number of guests and 90.1% in the number of overnight stays compared to the same month of 2021.
These percentages correspond to 3,029.1 thousand guests and 8,628.4 thousand overnight stays in total tourist accommodation last July.
As of now, regarding pre-pandemic period, there was an increase of 6.3% in the number of guests and higher than 4.8% for overnight stays.
This means that there were over 179.8 thousand guests and over 397.2 thousand overnight stays respectively.
Furthermore, with regard to non-residents, the share of overnight stays, which was 41.3% in July 2021, now amounts to 66.3%.
likewise this evolution of overnight stays by region compared to 2021 stands for:
- 33.1% in the Algarve,
- 22.7% in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area,
- 15.6% in the North of the country,
- 10.5% in RA Madeira
- 10.0% in the Center.
In this sense, we verify that the regions where the growth was more accentuated will be the Autonomous Region of Madeira (+21.0%), the North (+14.9%) and the Center (+10.6%).
On the other hand, in terms of markets, the The United Kingdom remains the predominant market with 19% of overnight stays from non residents (+1.0%).
It should be noted that the Spanish market with an addition of 2.3% in market share, which now corresponds to 12.6% and still North American market with an increase of 35.9%, which corresponds to a market share of 7.6%.
As for the total accumulated, it is estimated that 14,259.4 thousand guests stayed in accommodation units, giving rise to 37,229.1 thousand overnight stays.
In other words, these numbers result in an increase of 58.5% for residents and 406.2% for non-residents compared to 2021.
Therefore, the predictions of the Portugal's bank which projected a significant growth for tourism in terms of revenues that increased 11% compared to 2019 (see article).
In this sense, the Secretary of State for Tourism, Commerce and Services, Rita Marques, said that “the tourism sector is, today, again, a essential engine in our economy.”
Thus, to conclude, he refers that “Portugal stands out again as one of the most internationally competitive destinations”.
