Following the gradual implementation of the 1990 Schengen Agreement, Portugal and most other EU countries have been implementing the agreement to prevent trafficking in human beings and other illegal practices.
Since 2015, Portugal has more strictly enforced the law on the accommodation of foreign citizens, which requires that any person who provides accommodation to non-Portuguese citizens, collects and communicates the details of entry, exit and identification of all foreign guests who use their accommodation.
