Tourism – 45% increase in overnight stays in 2021

In 2021, the tourism sector reached an increase of 39.4% compared to 2020 in the number of guests, reaching 14.5 million guests, which represented 37.5 million overnight stays (+ 45.2%).

According to data from INE, this growth in tourism was not enough to reach pre-pandemic numbers, as compared to 2019, there was a decrease in the number of guests of 46.4% and in overnight stays 46.6%.

according to INE, in 2021 the increase in the number of overnight stays was recorded in all regions, with special emphasis on the Azores (+118.6%) and Madeira (+79.8%).

As for the origin of guests visiting our country, the United Kingdom remains the main country of origin (16.6% of overnight stays), followed by Spain (14.3%), Germany (11.9%) and France (11 .8%).
